Who calls us about gold coins

Denton County sellers with one gold piece and sellers with a full tube both start here.

  • Gold Eagles, Buffalos or Krugerrands were bought years back as savings, and now some or all can go.
  • You came across older U.S. gold in a family safe deposit box.
  • You have proof gold in a Mint box that has sat in a closet for years.
  • You own a gold coin worn as a pendant. If you also have chains and rings to sell, our gold jewelry page covers them.

Gold value and collector value

Think of a gold coin as having a floor and, sometimes, something built on top of it.

The floor: gold content

Size and karat tell us how much pure gold is in the coin. That amount tracks the gold market and is present in every gold coin, worn or not.

On top: collector interest

A scarce date, a low-mintage mint mark or unusually fine condition can add to the floor. Recent bullion coins seldom have much of this. Older U.S. gold frequently does.

You will know which one applies

For each coin we say whether it is being valued on its gold alone or on gold plus collector interest, and why.

Gold Eagles and Gold Buffalos

The U.S. Mint's two gold bullion series, and the gold coins we see most often in Denton.

  • American Gold Eagle

The U.S. Mint has struck it in 22-karat gold since 1986, in 1, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/10 ounce sizes. The reverse states how much fine gold the coin holds.

  • American Gold Buffalo

First struck in 2006 in 24-karat gold, one ounce in most years. The design borrows the bison and portrait from the 1913 Buffalo nickel.

  • Proofs and special finishes

Both coins were also sold to collectors in proof and other finishes, with a Mint box, capsule and certificate. Those three pieces belong together, so bring all of them.

Ready to talk about your gold coins?

Call or send the form. A rough count, and whether any coins sit in slabs or Mint boxes, is all we need to plan the appointment.

Older U.S. gold, struck before 1933

Gold coins were ordinary American money until 1933, when they were pulled from circulation. The survivors turn up in old safes, bank boxes and family collections.

The date and mint mark change everything

One design can be plentiful in one year and hard to find the next, and a single letter on the coin can shift it again.

  • Philadelphia coins of this era generally have no mint mark at all.
  • Carson City, marked CC, made only a small fraction of the gold that Philadelphia did.
  • Charlotte (C) and Dahlonega (D) struck gold only, in small runs, and both shut down in 1861.
  • New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S) and later Denver (D) each have their own plentiful and scarce years.

Coins you may be holding

  • Gold dollars and quarter eagles, the small denominations
  • Three-dollar gold pieces
  • Liberty Head half eagles and eagles
  • Indian Head gold in the quarter eagle, half eagle and eagle sizes
  • Double eagles in the Liberty Head and Saint-Gaudens designs

More on scarce dates

Our rare coin page walks through how mintage, survival rate and grade work together.

How we look at a gold coin

  1. Identify each piece

First we pin down what you have: the coin and its date, or the karat stamp inside a ring or clasp.

  2. Gold and silver weighed where you can see it

The scale sits in plain view, so you see every reading.

  3. Weigh collector value against melt

A few gold coins bring more from collectors than their gold is worth. Bullion and jewelry are nearly always priced by the metal.

  4. Walk you through the offer

You hear how we reached the number. Then take it, turn it down, or sell just some of the items.

Gold coins from other countries

The method does not change: gold weight and karat first, then any collector demand.

  • South African Krugerrand

Made since 1967 with one troy ounce of fine gold in a 22-karat alloy. The copper in that alloy gives it a warmer, reddish color than an Eagle.

  • Canadian Maple Leaf

Struck by the Royal Canadian Mint since 1979 in nearly pure gold, softer and brighter than most 22-karat coins.

  • British sovereign

A small 22-karat coin made for roughly two hundred years, so the portrait on the front changes from one reign to the next.

  • Mexican and European gold

Mexican pesos, French and Swiss francs and other national gold all come through. Each one gets identified and its gold weight calculated.

Handle gold coins as little as possible

Gold is a soft metal. A careless wipe or a home test can cost a coin its collector appeal.

  • Keep capsules and slabs shut. A graded coin should stay in its holder.
  • Skip the polish. Even a soft cloth drags fine lines across the fields.
  • No acid kits or scratch stones. Both mark the coin. We will test it with you instead.
  • Touch only the rim. Skin oils can leave lasting prints on proof surfaces.

Questions about gold coins

Is a gold coin worth more than its gold?

It depends on the coin. Modern bullion coins like Eagles and Krugerrands usually sell close to their gold content. Pre-1933 American gold may be worth extra to collectors, based on date, mint mark and condition.

Why does an offer on gold coins change from week to week?

Gold trades every business day and its price moves with it. An offer reflects the market on the day of your appointment, which is why we do not quote figures ahead of time.

My coin has been set in a bezel or soldered to a chain. Is it still worth looking at?

Yes. Jewelry work usually reduces what a collector will pay, but none of the gold has gone anywhere. We look at the coin and the mount with you and explain both.

Do I need the original box and certificate?

They are not required, but bring them if you have them. On proof coins, the Mint packaging and paperwork confirm the exact issue and year.
