Is your silver the kind this page covers?
This page is about silver coins, from one roll of Roosevelt dimes to a box of dollars.
- You pulled pre-1965 change out of circulation years ago and kept it.
- Morgan and Peace dollars came to you through family.
- Silver Eagles were picked up a few at a time and you are ready to let them go.
- You also own silver bars or rounds. See our bullion page for those.
Which U.S. coins have silver in them
The year on the coin answers most of the question. This table covers the common American silver coins.
| Coin | Dates | Silver |
|---|---|---|
| Dimes, quarters and halves | Up to and including 1964 | 90% silver |
| Kennedy half dollars | Dated 1965 through 1970 | 40% silver |
| Wartime Jefferson nickels (big mint mark over Monticello) | Late 1942 through 1945 | 35% silver |
| Morgan dollars, original run | 1878 to 1904, then 1921 | 90% silver |
| Peace dollars, original run | 1921 to 1928, then 1934 and 1935 | 90% silver |
| American Silver Eagle | 1986 to today | One troy ounce, .999 fine |
| Circulated dimes and quarters | 1965 to today | No silver (copper-nickel) |
Modern Morgan and Peace dollars
Starting in 2021 the Mint brought both designs back for collectors, struck in .999 fine silver and sold in Mint packaging. They are easy to separate from the originals.
Silver value or collector value
Two coins of the same type and the same silver content can be valued very differently.
Usually bought on silver weight
- Worn 90% dimes, quarters and halves in common dates
- 40% Kennedy halves from 1965 through 1970
- Circulated wartime nickels
- Loose Silver Eagles without boxes or capsules
Often worth more than the silver
- Low-mintage dates and mint marks in any series
- Uncirculated coins with their original luster intact
- Proofs and complete sets still in Mint packaging
- Morgan and Peace dollars in higher grades
Why worn 90% silver is counted by face value
Common, circulated 90% change is normally totaled by face value. Ten silver dimes hold about as much silver as two silver halves, so face value works as a handy yardstick.
Once the better coins are set aside, even a heavy box is quick to tally.

Morgans, Peace dollars and Silver Eagles
The big silver coins. Each Silver Eagle contains one troy ounce, and the two classic dollars have long lists of sought-after dates.
-
Morgan dollar
Named for its designer, George T. Morgan, with Liberty on the front and an eagle on the back. Any mint mark sits under the wreath on the reverse, above the word DOLLAR.
-
Peace dollar
Introduced in 1921 to mark the end of World War I. The reverse shows an eagle perched on a rock with the rays of a rising sun.
-
American Silver Eagle
The Mint's silver bullion coin, carrying the Walking Liberty design from the old half dollar. Proof versions come in a presentation box from the Mint, with a certificate.
Think you have a better date?
Scarce dates, mint marks such as CC on a Morgan, and how grade is judged are all on our rare coin page.
How we look at silver coins
-
Identify each piece
First we pin down what you have: the coin, its date and mint letter, or the stamps on a bar or round.
-
Gold and silver weighed where you can see it
The scale sits in plain view, so you see every reading.
-
Weigh collector value against melt
Most silver is priced by weight and purity. Where a coin carries collector value too, we point it out.
-
Walk you through the offer
You hear how we reached the number. Then take it, turn it down, or sell just some of the items.
Silver inside proof and mint sets
Some sets hold silver and many do not. The date and the label on the package settle it.
- Every proof set up to 1964 has its dimes, quarters and halves in 90% silver.
- Between 1965 and 1970, a set may include a 40% silver Kennedy half.
- From 1992 on, the Mint has offered separate silver proof sets, marked as silver on the packaging.
- Eisenhower dollars sold to collectors, uncirculated in blue packs and proofs in brown cases, contain 40% silver. Pocket-change Ikes contain none.

Questions about silver coins
How do I tell a silver quarter from a regular one?
Check the date: anything from 1964 back is 90% silver. The edge confirms it. Silver quarters show a solid gray-white edge, while later ones show a band of copper.
Which Kennedy half dollars contain silver?
The 1964 Kennedy is 90% silver. Those dated 1965 through 1970 are 40% silver. Circulation Kennedys from 1971 on have none.
My Morgan dollar is pretty worn. Should I still bring it?
Yes. Every original Morgan contains a little over three-quarters of a troy ounce of pure silver, however worn it is, and certain dates hold collector interest even in low grades.
Do I need to pull the silver out from the rest of my change?
It saves time, but it is not required. If you sort, keep rolls, albums and sets intact and only separate loose coins.
How can I spot a silver war nickel?
Flip it over. Nickels from late 1942 through 1945 that contain silver show an oversized P, D or S over Monticello's dome. Ordinary Jefferson nickels have a small letter somewhere else on the coin, or none.
